Become a Girl Advocate

What is a Girl Advocate:

Each year, up to four girls will be chosen to serve as Girl Advocates (GA’s) on Girl Scouts of Hawai`i’s Board of Directors. As GA’s, they are expected to represent and be a voice for their peers through attendance in board meetings, active participation in board discussions, and various presentations to board members. This opportunity is currently only open to girls on Oahu. (Apply Here)

What You’ll Get:

Throughout their one-year term, GA’s can expect to sharpen their business acumen while developing leadership skills through the three keys (Discover, Connect, Take Action) as part of this unique opportunity. They can also utilize their experience as a GA in working toward their Silver and/or Gold Torch Award as well as a few other badges on their own time.

The ideal candidate

The ideal candidate is passionate about Girl Scouts because it has made a difference in her life in some way. She can identify how Girl Scouts makes a difference in the lives of girls, is confident in her beliefs and abilities, and can articulate her thoughts while remaining eager to learn from both her peers and other board members. She is also actively involved in various aspects and programs of Girl Scouts and has a desire to give back to her community to make the world a better place.

The selection process

Ewa No Ka Oi Celebrates World Thinking Day:

February 21, 2015:

The Ewa No Ka Oi Service Unit decided to use this year’s World Thinking Day theme ("Develop a global partnership for development")  to establish relationships with existing charities who work nationally or internationally. As they were learning how to sew troop 590, from the Ewa No Ka Oi service unit, decided they wanted to contribute to “Little Dresses For Africa.” After making 14 dresses on their own, they then used their service unit's World Thinking Day event to invite girls from other troops to each take a turn at a sewing machine.  This helped to turn their total donation into 19 dresses that will be sent to the organization this week!

Volunteer Positions
Training and support will be provided

Gold Award
·         Girl Scouts of Hawai‘i is seeking volunteers to help with the Gold Award committee as well as helping mentor girls who are earning their Gold Award.

·         Gold Award committee members are needed to approve higher awards across the state. Mentors are needed to work one on one with girl's to guide and offer support through the higher award process. Both committee members and Mentors are needed across the state, are flexible, and we'll work with your schedule and location!

Volunteer Trainer
·         Do you enjoy helping other volunteers learn the ropes and get excited about their new role? Girl Scouts is looking for volunteer trainers who can deliver information about Girl Scouting to new and experienced volunteers. This is a perfect opportunity for someone who is looking to support Girl Scouting behind the scenes, who like to work with other adult volunteers, and for someone who needs a flexible volunteer opportunity.

STEM Professionals and Volunteers
·         Are you a professional or volunteer who use science, technology, engineering, or math in your field? Mentors and role models guide students in transforming their interests into careers. Even if you can volunteer only for a limited amount of time, studies have shown that talking with professionals in their own communities helps students. From leading an activity at STEM camp to mentoring a Gold Awardee, the roles of STEM professionals are crucial to the development of exceptional skills, excitement, and accomplishment for students. We’re developing a directory of these Hawaii-based people who are interested in being resources for interested Girl Scouts.

Girl Spotlight:

Kaytlen Akau
State Level Honoree
Prudential Spirit of Community Award

Kaytlen Akau, 13, of Lihue, an eighth-grader at Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, is an avid volunteer in her community who logged more than 300 hours last year working with children as a dance studio assistant and a leader at a county enrichment program, and participating in events to combat diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's disease. Kaytlen said she was inspired to volunteer by her oldest sister, who has always made helping others a part of her life. "I want to be like her," said Kaytlen.

A natural dancer, Kaytlen was asked by her instructor to
help out at weekend dance classes for 3- to 10-year-olds. She spends more than three hours each Saturday helping kids in three classes who are having difficulty with steps and need extra help. Last summer, Kaytlen served as a junior leader supervising children in a county parks and recreation enrichment program. For the past several years, Kaytlen has participated with her family in the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, and as a new Girl Scout, she assisted with a walk to raise money for the Alzheimer's Association, and with a county aid station at the Kauai Marathon.
