Mary Stewart Gaber

1912-2015

“Mary Gaber was born in 1912 in Rockford, Illinois to parents Lewis N. and Martha Stewart.  Her father was a mechanical engineer; her mother a registered Nurse.  She met and married Lee Gaber, a salesman, of Chicago in 1945.  They lived in Arkansas for five years, moved to Arlington Heights, Illinois until 1959 before moving to Kaneohe, Hawaii which remained her home town for many years.  In her retirement she made her home in Crystal River, Florida, from 2002-2009.  She spent time again in Kaneohe, living at Pohai Nani retirement home.  Finally, she resided for the past year with family in Whittier, California.  She passed away on March 4, in hospice care, from respiratory problems.    […]   Volunteering was a big part of her life.  Mary Gaber was a cub scout leader when her boys were young, then a Girl Scout leader and volunteer, with over 50 years as a member of GSUSA.  She loved bowling, joining many leagues over the year and was still averaging 175 in her 70’s.  Most importantly she was a founder of the ‘Gals in Green’ bowling league, which for over four decades has donated funds to the Hawaii Girl Scout Council.      […]   Private services are planned in Whittier this month and in Honolulu in early July.”   Our sincerest condolences go out to the Gaber family.

"Troop 682 of Honoka’a was looking for a community service project they could do not only as a troop but as individuals or as families for years to come. A community service that not only will impact our home but the girls themselves.  On 3/18/2015 6 girls from troop 682 and their troop leader went on their first visit to the Koai'a Tree Sanctuary. This is a 13 acre native forest preserve, of what used to be 40,000 acres. They first hiked around the preserve to learn what this land used to look like and to discover which of the plants and trees are native and which ones are not (and how the non-native plants arrived on the island). They ended the day with helping to remove the fountain grass which poisons the native trees so new trees cannot grow.  The girls had fun and worked hard and are looking forward to bringing more of their Girl Scout sisters to the sanctuary to help. The troop hopes to schedule at least 3 trips to the Koai'a Tree Sanctuary per year and hopefully other areas as well." Don’t miss out on the Scouts Only discount (each ticket does come with a patch).   For Dates, and to Buy Tickets Click Here.     The American Red Cross: The Paradigm Challenge Across the Nation, the American Red Cross responds to about 70,000 disasters each year (about 1 every 8 minutes) and an average of 7 people a day perish in home fires.  In Hawaii, we respond to disasters every 4 days.  Over 90 percent of these disasters are fire-related.   The Paradigm Challenge is a privately funded youth challenge, supported by the Red Cross, to motive youth to learn about fire safety and take action to reduce death and injuries from home fires.  For challenge entries, youth can submit ideas to save lives such as posters, videos, inventions, messages, community events, mobile apps, websites or anything else.     Who is eligible to participate? The challenge is open to all youth ages 7 to 18 What are the prizes? The 100 teams with the best ideas will win cash prizes up to $100,000.  Winning teams of four or more in three age divisions will share: •    1st Place: $20,000 (One of the first place teams will win the $100,000 Grand Prize) •    2nd Place: $10,000 •    3rd Place: $5,000 •    Runners-up will receive a cash prize of $500 per team, regardless of team size When is the deadline?
