Take Action Survey!

PLEASE take just a few minutes of your time to fill out this quick survey!  It is meant for those troops who completed at least one community service/take action project this membership year (October 1, 2014 – May 2015).  We know our troops complete many hours of community service, and our goal is to start gathering as much information as we can.  Mahalo!

2014-2015 Scout of the Year
Presented by the Veterans of Foreign Wars

Autumn Ollice, daughter of Commander Larry Ollice and Marianna Ollice attended the VFW Colonel Horace Hickam
post 970 meeting on May12 and was recognized for being selected as 2014-2015 Scout of the Year by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. She was selected by post 970 for her exemplary dedication to scouting and service to others and her community. She then was selected as the state of Hawaii's scout representative in the national level competition which awards the national winners $5000, $3000, $1000 scholarships.
At the ceremony Autumn spoke about how being a tag-a-long sibling supporting her five older brothers through their trail to Eagle Scout helped prepare her for her journey through Girl Scouting and success with her Gold Award. She loves being a Girl Scout camp counselor and hopes to continue it throughout her life. Her Gold Award project was to bring awareness to the community about safe and proper recycling and she improved the recycling program at the Aloha Stadium adding over 100 recycle barrels and rain run off lids to their inventory. She volunteered with NOAA and Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam setting up recycling awareness booths for Oceanfest and the Earth Day Fair and she invited singer songwriter and environmental activist Jack Johnson to have a cameo in her PSA to be shown on the Jumbotron at the stadium about recycling.

Autumn volunteers often and has earned two President's Volunteer Service Awards, gold level, having logged over 600 hours of service in the past two years. Giving back is very important to Autumn. Attending both Leeward Community College and Radford High School Autumn maintains a 4.4 GPA and hopes to pursue a career in the biomedical engineering field to design cutting edge prosthetic.
 Congratulation Autumn!

What’s a highlight of your scouting experience?

For the graduating Ambassadors of Koko Head Service Unit Troop 617, a highlight of their scouting experience was placing the peace pole at Camp Paumalu.  It started as the culminating take action project for a journey, and is now a constant reminder to all campers to put peace first.

Kauai Girl Scouts Give Back!

The Girl Scouts of Hawai’i Kauai have been very busy in the month of May!  After a successful cookie season, the girls decided they wanted to give back to their community.  Over the course of one weekend they managed to make that goal come to life.
Five girls from the after school leadership programs at Kalaheo and Eleele schools were able to collect more than 325 pounds of food to help feed some of Kauai’s hungry people.  The delivery, made to Kauai Independent Food Bank on May 2nd, will most likely go toward the Keiki Backpack Program, where keiki receive a backpack of healthy food and snacks to carry them through the weekend.
The next day eighteen scouts from Kapaa, Kalaheo, as well as girls from the Kapaa and Wilcox afterschool leadership programs delivered their donation to the Healing Horses Kauai facility in Waialua.  They were able to collect $450 worth of supplies, which included necessities such as feed, shampoo, conditioner, buckets, and rakes. Afterward, girls received instruction on horses, and were even able to feed and water the animals, even getting to paint a horse.  This donation will help Healing Horses continue running their program, which assists in the emotional, physical, mental, and social well-being of Kauai’s youth and disabled community through equine-assisted activities.

What girl doesn’t love to get up and dance?! The HHSU held “Dance Camp” at Camp Paumalu, which not only included lessons in multiple styles of dance, but a true outdoor experience!

The day was spent designing colorful and expressive
decorations for the evening’s performance. Girls also got to put on their boogie shoes and learned the Macarena, Tinkiling, Bollywood, Russian dance, and the old classic- the Electric Slide! Everyone left having a great time and this might just go down in the books as a favorite!

Why Are You a Girl Scout?

“Many people in my life asked me why Girl Scout?!
My answer was Girl Scouts helps you grow into a young beautiful lady. Girl Scouts helps you become someone who is strong, independent, and a self directed learner. Girl Scouts helps you make new friendships and build life skills. I believe life skills are very important in life because without them you will be indecisive and confused. Also in Girl Scouts I learned how to work with others even if you don't get along with them. That means being a positive and polite person no matter what the situation is. Last but not least learning how to be comfortable in your own skin. I learned how to be happy with myself. My mom always told me " Beauty isn't about looks, make up, or clothes, true beauty comes from being yourself, and the more you show who you really are, the prettier you will be". That to me means like yourself for you because self worth is important because without self worth how can you love others if you don't love yourself! These are the main key points I learned in Girl Scouts :)”

Girl Scouts of Hawai’i
Celebrate Earth Day!

Troop 674 spent Earth Day at Whole Foods Kailua.  They made Butterfly Vases adding color patterns to cardboard wings and attaching empty drink bottle bodies with pipe cleaners. It was to help with their promotion of the importance of pollinators to our food production. Want to do this on your own?  See the diagram below!

Meanwhile, Brownie troop 445, put their silhouette on reusable bags!
