Summer Activity idea: Children's Discovery Forest at Honolulu Zoo

Is your troop looking for summer activities? The Children’s Discovery Forest at the Honolulu Zoo has opportunities open for groups and individuals. Field trips for small groups include learning about native plants and enjoy the early Hawaiian culture. Activities include a brief introduction to the site, followed by weeding of the invasive grass species, with some planting and harvesting of the sweet potatoes. Participants pay the Zoo’s entrance fee, but there are no other fees associated with the field trip, and participants are welcome to enjoy the Zoo after their session is over.

The Discovery Forest also offers monthly volunteer work days. These are coming up on May 21st and June 18th from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m., and Zoo admission is free for registered volunteers. Activities include native forest education, planting seedlings, pulling weeds, harvesting sweet potatoes, etc.

For more information about these opportunities, please contact Linda Duling, Honolulu Zoo's Children's Discovery Forest Volunteer Coordinator, and visit their website at http://www.mahaloaina.org/homepage/projects/zoo-discovery-forest/ for more information.
