Will you Play60?

The Girl Scouts of Northeast Kansas and Northwest Missouri got to Play60 with the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this year. Now, it's your turn! Read about their event here, then sign up to join in the fun: Play60 with the Chiefs

Girls from Brownies through Seniors can sign up for a free Play60 event coming to Kapiolani Park in Honolulu on January 30th. The NFL is offering the opportunity to Girl Scouts to learn skills and drills with certified coaches.

While the event is free, you do need to register online, and you'll be required to complete both a GSH health form and an NFL waiver. Have friends who'd like to join in the fun but who aren't Girl Scouts yet? It's not too late for them to register! We're a quarter of the way into the 2016 membership year, and there's plenty of fun and adventure in store.

A Girl Scout on the Rhode to Success

One of Girl Scouts of Hawai‛i’s own alumni continues to make the world a better place even after her Girl Scout career. Katherine Clifton, a former Gold Award recipient, has been selected from over 860 candidates for a Rhodes scholarship! Katherine impressed her classmates and fellow Girl Scouts at Punahou School before attending Princeton University. Now Hawai‛i’s very own American Rhodes scholar will be attending Oxford University for her master’s degree. Katherine will be pursuing two degrees in Russian and Eastern European studies and in Migration Studies.

During her time with Girl Scouts, Katherine accomplished many things. Most notably, she earned her Gold Award through her work with Hawaii Literacy, a nonprofit dedicated to improving literacy rates in Hawai‛i. Her Gold Award project involved the creation of a video explaining Hawaii Literacy’s mission in both Samoan and Marshallese. Katherine lived in Serbia for nine months while attending Princeton and continued the Girl Scout culture by teaching English to children in a Roma city. She also tutored inmates in New Jersey correctional facilities.

Her volunteerism, along with her studies at Punahou School, lead Katherine to her new path to Oxford University. An article written by Timothy Hurley about Ms. Clifton’s road to success can found in the Star Advertiser at the following link: http://www.staradvertiser.com/hawaii-news/punahou-princeton-alumna-1-of-32-u-s-rhodes-scholars

We are so proud of what Katherine accomplished with Girl Scouts of Hawai`i and will continue to accomplish at Oxford University. Kudos!

Run! Pass! Play 60!

The NFL Pro Bowl is coming to town and the NFL is offering Girl Scouts of Hawai`i an opportunity to participate in their Play 60 initiative! Play 60 is the NFL’s campaign to encourage kids to get 60 minutes of exercise a day. The event here on Oahu will allow girls to interact with certified coaches and to practice skills and drills like running and passing. If your troop is working on one of the legacy Athlete badges, this event fits right in! And, Play 60 is free (though you’ll need to register for the event through the GSH website).

The health information form will be required, and the NFL has a waiver we'll be sending out to you as well. Join us for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

Thank You!

Thank you for your support on #GivingTuesday! Girl Scouts of Hawai`i appreciates our fabulous network of volunteers, donors, girls and their families that make our mission to build girls of courage, confidence, and character that make the world a better place possible.

This year’s #GivingTuesday movement encouraged generosity, philanthropy and awareness across the globe. As Girl Scouts, we’re proud to have been a part of this worldwide day of giving. We instill in our girls the importance of leadership skills necessary to recognize, speak out and take action on issues in their communities. From their first days as a Daisy, Girl Scouts learn that they are capable of making real, lasting, and local change!

We firmly believe that the Girl Scout experience should be available to all girls across our state. Your generosity and support are what make it possible for us to reach out to more girls and develop new, exciting programs and experiences year-round. We sincerely appreciate our supporters, and look forward to connecting with more of  you through the holidays and into the new year.
